Lust, Caution
Hated it. Completely. I think I've never been a great fan of Ang Lee's work, but I found this movie utterly pointless. That is unless you measure a film's quality for the amount ot torrid sex scenes between asians it has.

While watching it I realized that I still haven't seen any good movie about undercover agents or spies. Oddly enough movies never seem to delve enough in the undercover agent's psychology. Instead they prefer to approach him/her from an external point of view, and deal with his actions more that than with his motivations. Skipping the most interesting part of all.

Dexter Season 1
Pretty much the opposite. The best serial killer story I've had the pleasure of watching ever (well, perhaps the Red Dragon comes a close second). Deep, new, refreshing and bloody. I really liked the way the show portrays the mind of a psycho.

Californication:
A brilliant Fox Mulder, I mean David Duchovny, in another unforgettable role. In the beginning it appears to be simply a story about sex, but instead it's a beautiful tale of love, growing up and loss.

I seem to be running out of shows. Fortunately the last season of the Wire has just started, and I still have a whole season of Dexter to watch. Life's good. Even if the grey rabbit-man says that the world will end in just 24 days :-D.

Have you seen The Lives of Others? I haven't, but by all accounts it's supposed to be brilliant.

Yes I saw it quite a while ago. I guess one of the advantages of not living in an English speaking country is that we get other european films sooner than anyone. The downside to this is of course that we sometimes don't see american films until months later of their premiere.

I liked it a lot. Even though I found the main female character a bit too archetypical for my taste, the rest was simply brilliant, and moving too.

Thanks for the recommendation though ;-).

I would definately recommend the B&W version of "The Spy that came in from the Cold" as a good double agent picture. Any of the LeCarre's filmed with Alec Guinness are superb. There's also a rather good series called "The Sandbaggers" which aired on Granada in the early eighties which looks at espionage from the point of view of the controllers.

"My Silent War" by Kim Philby is essential reading for anyone interested in the psychology of the double agent.

Great! Thanks a lot!

I've been meaning to see "The Spy that came in from the Cold" for a long time now. My father has recommended it several times, and I'm sure it must be great source material for my Cold Citiy games.

I didn't know the "Sandbaggers", or "My Silent War", though I'm familiar with Philby's figure from Tim Power's "Declare". Thanks a lot for the recommendations!!! :D

Well, I saw Lust, Caution last Saturday and I loved it. I should also recommend El Destino de Nunik. It is shown in Monopol.

Users of LJ, please excuse me if I'm off on this subject.

Awakedreamer, I don't know if you're the one who subscribed on Ulteem few days ago...

I'm searching for someone who uses the same name and touched my mind by his words.

So I send this comment with my mail : gauthier_geoffrois@msn.com, and once again, please excuse me for "spaming"...

Gauthier
